In the late 1960s, Alfa Romeo established the works racing team AUTODELTA. With the establishment of AUTODELTA, Alfa Romeo decided to enter the Sports Prototype Car Championship, which was at the height of its popularity at the time.
Alfa Romeo decided to enter this category, which was dominated by such powerhouses as Ferrari, Porsche, and Ford,
Alfa Romeo developed a pure racing car, the Tipo 33. In 1975, the car with a mid-ship layout, the ideal form of a racing car, won the world championship.
